The UEFA Champions League is a prestigious football tournament and is played annually. It is organized by Union of European Football Associations and is joined by the winners of different national leagues and for some countries, by runner-ups as well. It is the most esteemed club tournament in European football. Worldwide, it has the highest number of viewers in a sporting event, with over 360 million TV viewers in the finals of 2012-2013, which is highest till date.
With its commencement in 1992, this tournament substituted the European Champion Club’s cup and allowed multiple teams from different countries. Before this, only champion clubs from every nation were allowed. In 1990’s, the format extended and started a round-robin stage and thereby also including clubs who finished as runner-ups for a nation’s top league tournament.
The 2017-18 champions league will be the 63rd season of the tournament. It will be played at NSC Olimpiyskiy Stadium in Kiev, Ukraine. The winners of the tournament will qualify as the UEFA representatives at next FIFA Club World Cup which will be hosted by the United Arab Emirates.
Real Madrid, having bagged 12 titles, is highly dominant club in the tournament. In UEFA Champions League, they were the first to defend their title successfully. Every year, the winning team is awarded a European Champion Clubs’ Cup. If any team wins three years in a row or five times in total, then the replica of this cup and a commemorative badge is given which they can wear permanently on their uniform.
